Popcorn Ceiling Removal
Since the mid-2000s, the popularity of textured popcorn ceilings has diminished significantly across North America. A trend toward more modern, clean-lined design features has influenced home improvement professionals to provide popcorn ceiling removal services. In comparison to smooth ceilings, textured ceilings are generally less reflective of natural light, may harbor more dust and allergens, and may be more difficult to patch and touch up after drywall repair.
Why Were Popcorn Ceilings Popular?
First, popcorn ceilings disguise imperfections. Contractors didn’t have to spend hours fixing every crack, hole, or bump. Instead, they could just add the popcorn texture, paint, and call it a day.
Secondly, if you live in a multi-family buildings, popcorn ceilings tend to dampen sounds.
Why Are Popcorn Ceilings No Longer Popular?
Safety concerns were the primary driver. Before the late 1970s, many popcorn ceilings used asbestos to create the bumpy texture. While asbestos is safe when it’s left undisturbed, if it becomes airborne, it can lead to cancer and other diseases.
Modern popcorn ceilings are made with materials like Styrofoam, but the negative association with asbestos remains.
Of course, it’s not just about safety. Another reason popcorn ceilings’ popularity declined is because of their aesthetic. Most people simply don’t like the look of popcorn ceilings. They also tend to collect dust and dirt, and can be difficult to clean.
Unsafe materials, a divisive look, and difficult upkeep have all contributed to popcorn ceilings’ fall from grace. But will removing them add value?
Will Removing Popcorn Ceilings Help My Home Value?
We know popcorn ceilings are unpopular, but will removing them increase your home’s value? In the majority of homes, yes.
Popcorn ceilings are easy to notice, and make homes look and feel dated. Removing them is possible, but it’s recommended to leave the work to a pro. Modern home buyers are looking for move-in ready homes that won’t require any projects.
How long does the popcorn removal project usually takes?
Changing popcorn ceiling to a smooth surface may require several steps. Based on the material of your popcorn ceiling, we may need either to fully remove it or to sand it down. We would then use compound to create a smooth service. Compound will typically be applied several times with drying and sanding in-between layers to ensure smooth surface. We then prime the ceiling and paint it with two coats of paint. Based on our experience, if you are removing popcorn in a regular 2-bedroom condo in Hoboken, a team of 2 painters can complete the project in 4-5 days. If you are considering both removing the popcorn and painting the walls, it is highly recommended that popcorn is removed first.
